The Worcestershire village of Norton-juxta-Kempsey lies close to the River Severn in the Pershore district of the county. It enjoys open countryside and contains Norton Hall. In the mid to late 1800s the village held its own race meeting on Tuesday 23rd February 1869. The course, starting near to the Norton Retreat, consisted of a sound turf surface with moderately difficult fences and a straight run-in across 3 farms. The main race of the day, the Norton Manor Steeplechase over 2 ½ miles, was won by Little Ellen. No further meetings were held in this village, although the neighbouring Kempsey held meetings in 1868 and 1869. |
